The $99 duct cleaning ad: five questions to ask before you let them in

The offer is always the same: whole house, unlimited vents, $99, this week only. The industry association has been warning homeowners about it for years and it still works, because nobody asks the questions until the crew is already in the hallway. Ask them on the phone.

1. What exactly is included for that price?

If the answer is vents, that is the whole job. Trunk lines, returns, plenum, coil and blower are where the dirt is, and they will be quoted separately once the crew is inside. A real quote lists them.

2. Is the price per line, in writing, before work starts?

Legitimate companies price per supply line and per task and put it in writing after looking at the system. If the number cannot be written down before the truck arrives, the number is not real.

3. What equipment do you use?

Negative-air machine connected to the trunk with agitation tools down every line. If the answer is a vacuum with a hose, it is a vent dusting.

4. Who is coming to my house?

Employees of a local company with a name you can look up, or a subcontractor crew working a coupon route out of Austin or out of state. Ask for the company's Google profile and read the one-star reviews, because that is where the bait-and-switch stories live.

5. Will you show me photos before and after?

Anyone doing the work properly has a camera in the duct and is glad to show you. If they will not, ask yourself why.

What a fair job looks like

Free inspection with photos, written per-line price, half a day of work with the right equipment, after-photos sent to your phone. If the system is clean, they tell you and leave. That last part is the one the coupon companies never do, because the truck came out and something has to be sold.

They came to do the full inspection of our HVAC system and performed a thorough inspection with photos and a very detailed list of quoted recommendations. Gary and team were punctual the 3 times they came to our home and their price was very reasonable.

Noah took the time to show us photos from inside the vents and ductwork and clearly explained the level of cleaning needed and why. We really appreciated the transparency and education instead of feeling pressured.

Gary inspected the plenum, there was microbial growth in the insulation. The system was replaced 3 years ago but had the original 20 year old plenum. Gary replaced the plenum and installed a scrubber. We haven't had any allergy problems in our new home so far.

Noah was professional, knowledgeable, and extremely thorough while working on both my air ducts and chimney. He took the time to explain everything and made sure the work was done properly from start to finish.
